If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Cowboys, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.
Getting Caldwell where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Trey Smith deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 20th pick they get a true top target, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nothing to complain about; Emmanuel McNeil-Warren went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Circle this one: Jacob Rodriguez at slot 92 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jalon Kilgore in pick No. 112. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kaytron Allen at No. 152 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Aamil Wagner in Round 5, Pick 37 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Dae'Quan Wright at par in Round 5, Pick 40, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They robbed the room for Jeff Caldwell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
