2024 NFL Draft
· 5 picks
· 2 steals
· 2 reaches
You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chargers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. They banked enough surplus on Melton to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The Laube reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 15 they get a home-run threat at receiver, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid a round early for Kris Jenkins in Round 2, Pick 5, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Xavier Legette in the 69th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Max Melton slid further than he should have, and the 106th overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dylan Laube in slot 139 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
