Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Jaylin Noel, the No. 95 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 174. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The cost of the Burke reach is exactly the players who went right after him. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 20 they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Omarion Hampton slid further than he should have, and pick No. 44 is lovely value for the running back. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on Jordan Burch at the 76th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A minor itch, scratched.
They reached a country mile for Denzel Burke at pick 85, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Danny Stutsman still on the board at the Round 4 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a cornerback like Cobee Bryant reach slot 149 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Hollin Pierce in the 171st pick, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Jaylin Noel in Round 5, Pick 36 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
LeQuint Allen in pick No. 204 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Mitchell Evans at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Shemar James at No. 239, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Bilhal Kone at the 247th overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
