The Frank Crum selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 91 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
Jayden Daniels gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Ladd McConkey at No. 34, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Xavier Legette at par in slot 68, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached a country mile for Theo Johnson at pick 104, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Roger Rosengarten in the Round 4 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Bub Means, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Frank Crum in the 229th overall pick, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
