New England Patriots

McCarthy is the plan now, and the Patriots grade out a B.

The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. The bottom line is a respectable B.

The Harden pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.

The Corum reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 28
In No. 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A real need, handled.
R1.32 · Pick 32 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 36
In the 32nd overall pick they get a security blanket over the middle. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 26
A tidy bit of business in pick 34, where Cooper DeJean graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Bralen Trice · DE-EDGE · rank 63
Bralen Trice in slot 64 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Blake Corum · RB · rank 84
A reach for Blake Corum in the Round 3 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 89
Good price on Dominick Puni in pick No. 95, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 126
Nothing to complain about; Johnny Wilson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Sione Vaki · S · rank 158
Taking Sione Vaki in No. 181 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 205
They will replay Jaylan Ford at pick No. 231 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · Myles Harden · CB · rank 209
Myles Harden at the 253rd overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
