Los Angeles Chargers

Grand theft in slot 69: the Chargers steal Colson and grade out a B+.

The Chargers ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. They will answer for taking linebacker early while interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots went begging. They banked enough surplus on Colson to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.5 · Pick 37 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 42
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in pick 37, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 45
No edge and no loss on Roman Wilson in the 38th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 47
No drama and no debate, Kris Jenkins went about where he belonged in pick No. 47. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 50
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Junior Colson did not.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 75
Value with a capital V on Calen Bullock in No. 89, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 105
MarShawn Lloyd at Round 4, Pick 6 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 128
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Johnny Wilson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Michael Pratt · QB · rank 138
By-the-book stuff, Michael Pratt at No. 133 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 246
LaDarius Henderson at the 242nd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
R7.28 · Pick 248 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 254
Matthew Jones in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · Jalen Coker · WR · rank 259
Jalen Coker in pick No. 253 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
