It is a puzzling start. The Packers had quarterback, tight end and other spots to solve and reached instead for Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE, at Round 3, Pick 28. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Every board in the league had Ugwu lower, and that gap is the story. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Brian Thomas Jr.
· WR
· rank 29
Brian Thomas Jr. in the 25th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Kamren Kinchens
· S
· rank 37
Kamren Kinchens in pick No. 41 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.25
· Pick 57
· D.J. James
· CB
· rank 64
By-the-book stuff, D.J. James at Round 2, Pick 25 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Sedrick Van Pran
· C
· rank 90
They paid sticker price for Sedrick Van Pran in pick 88, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Maason Smith
· DT-EDGE
· rank 87
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in the 91st overall pick leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots for later.
R4.25
· Pick 125
· Isaiah Adams
· OT
· rank 122
A clean, defensible pick in the 125th pick with a little surplus value in Isaiah Adams. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· Dylan Laube
· RB
· rank 142
A straight-up fair deal on Dylan Laube at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.28
· Pick 203
· Brian Ugwu
· DL-EDGE
· rank 211
A reach on Brian Ugwu in slot 203; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.42
· Pick 217
· Steele Chambers
· LB
· rank 222
Steele Chambers in No. 217 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R6.44
· Pick 219
· Trevor Keegan
· OG
· rank 226
Trevor Keegan at Round 6, Pick 44 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
R7.26
· Pick 246
· Walter Rouse
· OT
· rank 248
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Walter Rouse. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
