The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Jaylon Hutchings went at the Round 6 slot, a good 137 picks before the board was ready. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Mims at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Amarius Mims in slot 56 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy little value on Blake Corum in the 87th pick, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Ty'Ron Hopper at Round 5, Pick 38 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaylon Hutchings this early at No. 216. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
DeVere Levelston at the 233rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jordan Whittington at No. 244 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
