Somebody in No. 169 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Dominick Puni, the No. 89 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. If Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 25 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tyler Guyton slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in the 58th overall pick, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
You do not let a cornerback like T.J. Tampa reach the 88th pick and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kamren Kinchens in No. 91 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board fumbled Kingsley Suamataia all the way to pick No. 126, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Circle this one: Dominick Puni at pick 169 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Myles Cole in Round 6, Pick 27 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Cedric Johnson at the 219th overall pick that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Trevin Wallace at slot 245. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ryan Watts. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
