It is a puzzling start. The Steelers had quarterback, edge rusher and other spots to solve and reached instead for J.C. Davis, an offensive lineman, at No. 135. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Thomas.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.21 · Pick 21 · Olaivavega Ioane · OG · rank 22
In pick 21 they get a building block for the line at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Lee Hunter · DT · rank 48
Good price on Lee Hunter in the 53rd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 72
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jacob Rodriguez in Round 3, Pick 12. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.21 · Pick 85 · Bryce Lance · WR · rank 90
By-the-book stuff, Bryce Lance at No. 85 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.35 · Pick 99 · Devin Moore · CB · rank 93
Devin Moore in the 99th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.21 · Pick 121 · Jack Endries · TE · rank 121
Jack Endries at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · J.C. Davis · OT · rank 139
They zigged when the board said zag, taking J.C. Davis at offensive lineman with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open.
R5.21 · Pick 161 · Louis Moore · S · rank 166
They paid sticker price for Louis Moore in pick No. 161, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.35 · Pick 216 · Jeremiah Wright · OG · rank 218
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Wright went about where he belonged in slot 216. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.8 · Pick 224 · Thaddeus Dixon · CB · rank 220
Thaddeus Dixon at the 224th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
R7.21 · Pick 237 · Zavion Thomas · WR · rank 224
A slide stopped in pick No. 237, with Zavion Thomas worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
