New England Patriots

A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-.

The tape said wait; the Patriots did not. Warren Brinson went at No. 220, a good 74 picks before the board was ready. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

The Hill pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Princely Umanmielen · DE-EDGE · rank 34
In pick 4 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Derrick Harmon · DT · rank 29
Nice patience on Derrick Harmon, who had no business lasting to the 38th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 57
Elic Ayomanor at Round 3, Pick 5 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Carson Schwesinger · LB · rank 69
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Carson Schwesinger at pick No. 77 is the proof. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.4 · Pick 106 · Quinshon Judkins · RB · rank 65
Taking Quinshon Judkins in No. 106 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Hollin Pierce · OT · rank 135
Hollin Pierce is a better player than the Round 5 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Tommi Hill · CB · rank 157
They robbed the room for Tommi Hill here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Warren Brinson · DL · rank 294
They reached a country mile for Warren Brinson at No. 220, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Jordan Hancock · S · rank 213
Jordan Hancock at the 238th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
