New England Patriots

The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on McGlothern: B.

Future A+

Somebody in the Round 7 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Dwight McGlothern, the No. 175 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. If McCarthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.10 · Pick 10 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 8
In slot 10 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Keon Coleman · WR · rank 36
Keon Coleman in pick 34 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
They went early on J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 38, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 57
They read the board right and Kingsley Suamataia was the payoff at the 68th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Jermaine Burton · WR · rank 52
They robbed the room for Jermaine Burton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 96
A tidy little value on Trey Benson in the 102nd pick, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · Malik Washington · WR · rank 98
Malik Washington in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Kalen King · CB · rank 140
Kalen King at Round 6, Pick 4 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 175
Taking Dwight McGlothern in No. 231 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
