For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Packers walked out of the weekend still thin at quarterback, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.
They are betting McClellan proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 19 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They did well to land Edgerrin Cooper in pick 40, just ahead of his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They took Patrick Paul at par in No. 51, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Good price on Caelen Carson in Round 3, Pick 19, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Braelon Allen in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tykee Smith at the 119th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A minor itch, scratched.
Theo Wease in pick No. 135 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Jase McClellan at the 197th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kaimon Rucker at pick 217 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Jaylon Carlies in pick No. 219, and that is fine. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
