There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chargers took Sedrick Van Pran a full 45 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Wease Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Chris Braswell went about where he belonged in the 37th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Emeka Egbuka in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Sedrick Van Pran in slot 50, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had Ja'Tavion Sanders higher than pick No. 69, and the tight end fell to them anyway. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Caelen Carson in No. 74 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Bucky Irving at par in the 97th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Nothing to complain about; Zak Zinter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Matt Goncalves at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good price on Cedric Gray in the 142nd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kamal Hadden in slot 145. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Roger Rosengarten at Round 6, Pick 8 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Theo Wease Jr. slipping to pick No. 205 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Akheem Mesidor at No. 226 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
