Dallas Cowboys

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D.

by Grumpy · 2024 NFL Draft · 23 picks · 1 steals · 12 reaches
Value C+
Need B
Trades F
Future A+

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 50 spots for Beaux Limmer, and value like that does not grow back. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.21 · Pick 21 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 21
In pick No. 21 they get a cornerstone up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Keon Coleman · WR · rank 24
In No. 24 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
The board had cheaper options than J.J. McCarthy at the Round 2 slot, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
Cooper Beebe in the 71st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 70
Payton Wilson in the 75th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 92
Bucky Irving at pick 76 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 95
Tyler Davis at the 87th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 83
A tidy little value on Mike Sainristil in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Beaux Limmer · C · rank 140
Beaux Limmer at No. 90 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 119
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in the 120th pick, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 129
Will Shipley at pick 124 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.10 · Pick 146 · Edefuan Ulofoshio · LB · rank 152
Edefuan Ulofoshio in Round 5, Pick 10 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.13 · Pick 149 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 160
They liked Kitan Oladapo enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 149. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 173
Jaylan Ford at pick No. 163 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Jaylen Harrell · DE-EDGE · rank 194
Jaylen Harrell in pick No. 185 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 209
They reached a country mile for Jase McClellan at slot 188, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 190
Christian Jones in No. 212 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.45 · Pick 220 · Maurice Smith · C · rank 236
They went early on Maurice Smith in the 220th pick, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 231
By-the-book stuff, Nathaniel Watson at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.7 · Pick 227 · Marcus Harris · DL-EDGE · rank 228
No drama and no debate, Marcus Harris went about where he belonged in pick 227. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 266
A wild overpay on Cody Simon in Round 7, Pick 13, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 249
A conviction pick on Dwight McGlothern at the 241st overall pick that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Mason Fairchild · TE · rank 290
Mason Fairchild in No. 245 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
