The Cowboys did not so much draft Mason Fairchild as overpay for him, 54 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The whole projection now runs through Jayden Daniels; hit there and everything else looks smarter. On value alone, Worthy makes the weekend a net positive.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Jayden Daniels in pick No. 9, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
In No. 27 they get a blindside protector. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Chris Braswell went about where he belonged in the 56th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Xavier Worthy at pick 87 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow Ruke Orhorhoro was still sitting there in slot 90, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Leonard Taylor III at No. 110, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
They went early on MarShawn Lloyd in pick 122, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They robbed the room for Sedrick Van Pran here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A safety of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 33 is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Jaylan Ford at par in slot 174, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Steal is underselling it; Layden Robinson at pick No. 188 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nathaniel Watson at the 212th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dwight McGlothern in the Round 7 slot, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Mason Fairchild this early at the Round 7 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
