Start where it matters. The Commanders took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. If Williams pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chop Robinson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 40th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Johnny Wilson in No. 67 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They liked Christian Haynes enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board fumbled Payton Wilson all the way to pick 97, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for James Williams. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They talked themselves into Khyree Jackson at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Javion Cohen at pick No. 141, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid up for Rasheen Ali at the 181st overall pick when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Michael Barrett at Round 7, Pick 3 for years; that is how good the value is. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
