The Commanders looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jaheim Bell at pick No. 67 regardless, 74 picks early.
Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Liufau steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Guyton. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in the 40th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaheim Bell in Round 3, Pick 3 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A big swing on Darius Robinson at pick 101, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Marist Liufau in the 103rd pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
By-the-book stuff, Beaux Limmer at Round 5, Pick 2 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 181 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Xavier Thomas in pick 220, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
