You could see the war room lean forward. Keon Coleman at slot 64 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They will need McCaffrey to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd overall pick they get a premier pass rusher, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Keon Coleman in pick 64 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Mason McCormick in Round 3, Pick 32, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Luke McCaffrey at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Theo Johnson in slot 158 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steal is underselling it; Jaylin Simpson at pick No. 172 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Jones at No. 210 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid a round early for Joshua Cephus in the 250th pick, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
