The Chiefs spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: DJ James, the No. 53 name on the board, in the Round 3 slot. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
If Boyd pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Roman Wilson went about where he belonged in the 40th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Patrick Paul at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They robbed the room for DJ James here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Luke McCaffrey at slot 132 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Khristian Boyd in pick 159, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Tahj Washington at Round 5, Pick 37 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value with a capital V on Josh Proctor in the 252nd pick, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
