The Chiefs did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Ryan Flournoy fell into pick 252. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
Every board in the league had Jefferson lower, and that gap is the story. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd overall pick they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kool-Aid McKinstry in the 69th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Dominick Puni at pick No. 110 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Isaac Guerendo in Round 4, Pick 32 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Jordan Jefferson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in No. 159, where Mason McCormick graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Luke McCaffrey all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Jaylin Simpson at pick 173 for years; that is how good the value is. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They read the board right and Walter Rouse was the payoff at No. 175. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ryan Flournoy in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
