The Chiefs lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C- in the wash.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Jones. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The Boyd pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
You do not let a linebacker like Edgerrin Cooper reach Round 2, Pick 32 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in pick 74, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Cooper Beebe here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Christian Jones at the 133rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaylin Simpson slipping to the 142nd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A real head-scratcher, Khristian Boyd in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 36 is the definition of value, full stop. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
