The war room fell hard for Drake Nugent, and it showed at No. 173: 37 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The Craig James deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They liked Brandon Dorlus enough to skip the value, taking him in the 64th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Isaac Guerendo at Round 4, Pick 11, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Jaylin Simpson in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid up for Luke McCaffrey at pick 132 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Khristian Boyd at the 159th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Drake Nugent at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jalen Sundell in No. 252. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Joshua Cephus in the 256th pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
