The tape said wait; the Chiefs did not. Jared Wiley went at the Round 5 slot, a good 33 picks before the board was ready.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd pick they get a bendy edge with upside. A clean fit for the roster.
Xavier Legette at pick No. 68 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They jumped the gun on Dominick Puni, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at the 95th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Isaac Guerendo in pick 117 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Jaylin Simpson in slot 132; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 5, Pick 23 with a little surplus value in Kitan Oladapo. A minor itch, scratched.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jared Wiley well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Tahj Washington a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
