The Chiefs spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Kool-Aid McKinstry, the No. 23 name on the board, in pick 64.
The Simpson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end, quarterback and other spots. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
The cost of the Washington reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They will replay Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 64th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jalen McMillan. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end, quarterback and other spots to take Jaylin Simpson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Jalyx Hunt in Round 5, Pick 23 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach for Tahj Washington in pick 173; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They read the board right and Michael Barrett was the payoff at the Round 7 slot. It fills a real need, too.
