The weekend has a hole in the middle of it named tight end, a need the Chiefs walked right past. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The Barrett steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Every board in the league had McCaffrey lower, and that gap is the story.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Devontez Walker at the 64th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They liked Leonard Taylor III enough to skip the value, taking him in the 95th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 132 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Mason McCormick at pick 159 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Dwight McGlothern graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Michael Barrett in Round 7, Pick 32 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
