The Chiefs looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jared Wiley at pick No. 173 regardless, 33 picks early. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They banked enough surplus on Murphy II to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at a price that makes it sweeter.
Xavier Legette in No. 64 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
DJ James in the 95th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Mason McCormick at the 132nd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had Luke McCaffrey higher than the Round 5 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jared Wiley in Round 5, Pick 37 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
