Call it larceny. Nathaniel Watson sat on the board until slot 252, and the Chiefs did not need to be asked twice.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. They will need Lovett to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
A clean, defensible pick in the 38th overall pick with a little surplus value in Troy Franklin. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good price on Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 64, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in the 95th pick, with Brandon Dorlus worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
Dominick Puni in pick 106 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylin Simpson. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reach for Kitan Oladapo in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Luke McCaffrey in slot 159. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Fabien Lovett a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 252 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
