Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chiefs spent Round 5, Pick 37 on Michael Barrett, a name most had 45 spots down the list.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That is an edge rusher worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Dominick Puni at No. 66, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A conviction pick on Isaac Guerendo at Round 3, Pick 32 that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaylin Simpson at the 132nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A real head-scratcher, Kitan Oladapo in slot 138 is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Justin Eboigbe in slot 159. The roster fit checks out.
Michael Barrett at the 173rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joshua Cephus. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
