The rest of the league had time to spare on Matthew Jones; the Chiefs did not wait, grabbing him 33 spots ahead at slot 209. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Mims pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st pick they get a long-term starter on the line, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Ricky Pearsall at the 63rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 94 with a little surplus value in Michael Hall Jr.. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid up for Ben Sinnott at pick 131 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Braelon Allen at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Michael Barrett at pick No. 171 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had Kitan Oladapo higher than Round 5, Pick 39, and the safety fell to them anyway. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Matthew Jones in slot 209 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dwight McGlothern in the 252nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
