This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: T.J. Tampa, the No. 39 name on the board, stolen at the Round 4 slot.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
Reaching for Gore Jr. left real value on the table behind him. The Commanders indulged a want in Smith while a need in wide receiver, tight end and other spots stayed open.
Bottom line, with Caleb Williams leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Tyler Guyton went about where he belonged in No. 36. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick No. 40, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid a round early for Christian Haynes in pick 67, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with wide receiver, tight end and other spots open.
Taking T.J. Tampa in the 102nd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Frank Gore Jr. this early at the Round 5 slot. It fills a real need, too.
