Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent pick 246 on John Emery Jr., a name most had 97 spots down the list. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Kinchens falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a disruptive interior force, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
A slide stopped in No. 41, with Troy Franklin worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kamren Kinchens at Round 2, Pick 25 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Christian Haynes at the 88th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bucky Irving. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Darius Robinson at slot 125 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cedric Gray in Round 4, Pick 35 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Jones in the 203rd overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dwight McGlothern well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Omar Speights in the Round 6 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They left a pile of value on the table to take John Emery Jr. this early at pick No. 246. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
