The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Nicholas Singleton, the No. 99 name on the board, sitting there at the 217th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Tee Higgins deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
In the end it comes back to Kelvin Banks Jr., and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 10 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Luther Burden III in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Alfred Collins in pick No. 69 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Majors at pick 105. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 143rd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Circle this one: Nicholas Singleton at No. 217 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nice patience on Miles Frazier, who had no business lasting to Round 7, Pick 4. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jake Briningstool in the 241st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Jordan Hancock at Round 7, Pick 28 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
