Green Bay Packers

The Packers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took John Emery Jr. a full 123 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Henderson. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Packers indulged a want in Oladapo while a need in quarterback, wide receiver and other spots stayed open.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.30 · Pick 30 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 19
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kool-Aid McKinstry at the Round 1 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 35
A clean, defensible pick in the 41st overall pick with a little surplus value in Chop Robinson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 57 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 57
Edgerrin Cooper at Round 3, Pick 25 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 64
Javon Bullard in pick 91 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.30 · Pick 93 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 88
A tidy little value on McKinnley Jackson in pick No. 93, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 158
They talked themselves into Jaylen Wright at pick 125, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 166
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Kitan Oladapo adds a safety and leaves quarterback, wide receiver and other spots untouched.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 162
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Chau Smith-Wade in No. 203, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.30 · Pick 205 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 163
They robbed the room for LaDarius Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · John Emery Jr. · RB · rank 342
John Emery Jr. in slot 219 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
