You could see the war room lean forward. Chau Smith-Wade at the 203rd pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The Wright pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The back end got a real overhaul.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at pick No. 32 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Calen Bullock went about where he belonged in the 41st overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 57 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They took Bucky Irving at par in the 88th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Darius Robinson well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zak Zinter in pick 93 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Brenden Rice all the way to the Round 3 slot, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Jaylen Wright in slot 125, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Javon Foster in pick 132 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Chau Smith-Wade in slot 203 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on J.J. Weaver in pick No. 217, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Demani Richardson at No. 219 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They paid up for Dwight McGlothern at the 246th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
