The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Gino Garcia at the 220th overall pick regardless, 70 picks early. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
The Warren pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
The Dion Dawkins pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
In the end it comes back to Tetairoa McMillan, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 17th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Tyler Warren in No. 38 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
They took Quinshon Judkins at par in Round 2, Pick 30, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taking Aireontae Ersery in pick 69 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Xavier Restrepo at slot 77 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They barely believed it either: Andrew Mukuba still on the board at the Round 4 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Seth McLaughlin in Round 5, Pick 6, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Torricelli Simpkins III at pick No. 217 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Gino Garcia in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
No drama and no debate, Shemar James went about where he belonged in No. 238. A minor itch, scratched.
