There is a lot to like until you notice tight end is still a hole. The Chiefs never got to the one that mattered most. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
They will need Newton to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Thrash at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A premium they did not need to pay, Kingsley Suamataia a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Josh Newton. A minor itch, scratched.
Jamari Thrash at Round 5, Pick 4 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Brennan Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 144. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Davis in the 159th pick, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
A reach for Tahj Washington in pick No. 181; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had Elijah Jones higher than pick 204, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
No edge and no loss on Matthew Jones in the 252nd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
