You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bears did exactly that with Tyler Onyedim in pick 89. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The Bears indulged a want in Joly while a need in cornerback, offensive lineman and other spots stayed open. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Whittington. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the heartbeat of the defense at fair value. A real need, handled.
They reached a country mile for Sam Roush at Round 2, Pick 25, and the board is aghast. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A curious use of slot 60. Cornerback, offensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a tight end in Justin Joly did not.
Value said wait; Tyler Onyedim in No. 89 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A clean, defensible pick in the 129th pick with a little surplus value in Gracen Halton. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Zavion Thomas all the way to pick 239, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for Noah Whittington here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
