The Patriots bet big and early on Marlin Klein, 94 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
On value alone, Benny makes the weekend a net positive. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 31 they get a ballhawk on the back end, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Marlin Klein in No. 63 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Antonio Williams at pick No. 95 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had Markel Bell higher than slot 125, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They will replay Treydan Stukes at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
J.C. Davis at the 171st pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 191 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Cyrus Allen still on the board at pick 198. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Bryce Boettcher all the way to the 202nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Taking DJ Campbell in slot 212 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Brent Austin in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
