The Chiefs spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Payton Wilson, the No. 68 name on the board, in the 94th pick. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. Every board in the league had Wright lower, and that gap is the story. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 36, where Brian Thomas Jr. graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Kingsley Suamataia, who had no business lasting to the 63rd overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Somehow Payton Wilson was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Jaden Hicks in pick 100; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamal Hadden. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They went early on Jaylen Wright in slot 141, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Ty'Ron Hopper at No. 161 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jordan Jefferson a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They liked Ethan Driskell enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 5 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nothing to complain about; Kenny Logan Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A straight-up fair deal on Walter Rouse at pick No. 252, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Dwight McGlothern in the 253rd pick, and that is fine. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
