You build a draft on nights like this. Isaiah Williams had no business being available in pick No. 231, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Gore Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Commanders indulged a want in Smith while a need in cornerback, edge rusher and other spots stayed open.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Guyton at pick No. 36 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 40, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ja'Tavion Sanders is a better player than the 67th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A want over a need in the 100th pick: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while cornerback, edge rusher and other spots keeps waiting.
They barely believed it either: Christian Mahogany still on the board at Round 4, Pick 2. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick 144 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaylan Ford in the Round 6 slot. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Isaiah Williams in pick No. 231 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
