The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Bo Nix, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
Reaching for Rouse left real value on the table behind him. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
However the rest shakes out, Jones at that price is a win they earned. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
The Patriots indulged a want in Stover while a need in interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots stayed open.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Bo Nix and all.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.22
· Pick 22
· Bo Nix
· QB
· rank 23
They paid sticker price for Bo Nix in No. 22, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Jared Verse
· DE-EDGE
· rank 16
You do not let an edge rusher like Jared Verse reach pick 34 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.20
· Pick 52
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 36
They read the board right and Xavier Legette was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 20. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Brenden Rice
· WR
· rank 67
Brenden Rice at pick No. 68 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.18
· Pick 82
· Cade Stover
· TE-EDGE
· rank 93
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
R3.36
· Pick 99
· Maason Smith
· DT-EDGE
· rank 86
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots untouched.
R4.4
· Pick 104
· Dominick Puni
· OT
· rank 101
Dominick Puni in the 104th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.18
· Pick 118
· Javon Solomon
· OLB-EDGE
· rank 108
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in slot 118 leaves interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots for later.
R4.36
· Pick 136
· Kamal Hadden
· CB
· rank 139
By-the-book stuff, Kamal Hadden at pick No. 136 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.24
· Pick 160
· Jaylin Simpson
· CB
· rank 153
Jaylin Simpson at the 160th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R5.26
· Pick 162
· Jaylen Wright
· RB
· rank 161
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylen Wright. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.35
· Pick 171
· Khristian Boyd
· DL-EDGE
· rank 158
Nice patience on Khristian Boyd, who had no business lasting to slot 171. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.7
· Pick 182
· Michael Barrett
· LB
· rank 187
Michael Barrett in Round 6, Pick 7 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R7.9
· Pick 229
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 203
Christian Jones at the 229th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.12
· Pick 232
· Walter Rouse
· OT
· rank 270
Walter Rouse at No. 232 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
