There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chargers took Mycah Pittman a full 128 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Bowers. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Taking Brock Bowers in No. 37 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Roman Wilson at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value with a capital V on Sedrick Van Pran in pick No. 105, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Frank Gore Jr. at slot 142 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Michael Barrett at Round 6, Pick 8 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A real head-scratcher, Mycah Pittman in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
