The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. The bottom line is a respectable B.
On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive. The Bertrand pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Spending an early pick on TE-EDGE with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Guyton at No. 34 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Trey Benson at pick 68 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE that was not the priority.
They took Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at par in Round 4, Pick 4, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A safety of that caliber at slot 136 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take JD Bertrand this early at pick No. 182. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A quiet steal in No. 188: Andru Phillips for less than the market said. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Steal is underselling it; Christian Jones at pick No. 229 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
