The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.6
· Pick 6
· Drake Maye
· QB
· rank 5
In Round 1, Pick 6 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Jordan Morgan
· OT
· rank 25
Nice patience on Jordan Morgan, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.25
· Pick 57
· Adonai Mitchell
· WR
· rank 31
Circle this one: Adonai Mitchell at slot 57 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 35
Somehow Xavier Legette was still sitting there in the 68th overall pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Bucky Irving
· RB
· rank 92
They paid sticker price for Bucky Irving in pick 91, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.4
· Pick 104
· Caelen Carson
· CB
· rank 85
Caelen Carson at No. 104 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.26
· Pick 126
· Max Melton
· CB
· rank 112
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Max Melton adds a cornerback and leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
R4.36
· Pick 136
· Sataoa Laumea
· OT
· rank 123
They read the board right and Sataoa Laumea was the payoff at the 136th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.7
· Pick 182
· Jaylen Wright
· RB
· rank 163
Taking Jaylen Wright in Round 6, Pick 7 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.9
· Pick 229
· Omar Brown
· S
· rank 201
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 229 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
