The Patriots torched the value chart for Jimmy Horn Jr., taking him 115 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
They banked enough surplus on Allen to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside. More want than need.
They took Tyler Booker at par in pick No. 38, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Deone Walker at Round 3, Pick 5 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Ozzy Trapilo in the 77th pick, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Emery Jones Jr. at slot 106 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for LeQuint Allen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into Jimmy Horn Jr. at the 220th pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jabbar Muhammad in slot 238 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
