You build a draft on nights like this. Javon Bullard had no business being available in Round 3, Pick 28, and the Packers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
Reaching for Allen left real value on the table behind him. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get an island corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A quiet steal in pick 41: Tyler Nubin for less than the market said. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A tidy bit of business in pick 57, where Kris Jenkins graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in pick No. 88, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Javon Bullard while clear needs at quarterback, wide receiver and other spots sat open.
They talked themselves into Braelon Allen at slot 125, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cedric Gray at the 135th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Steele Chambers in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They took Daequan Hardy at par in Round 6, Pick 42, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jared Wiley in the 219th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nothing to complain about; Ja'Had Carter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
