The Chargers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Marcellas Dial, the No. 194 name on the board, in pick No. 223. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
They are betting Henderson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Solomon pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and quarterback.
If Joe Alt and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for T.J. Tampa in the 38th pick, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good price on Mekhi Wingo in No. 69, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Blake Corum in Round 3, Pick 9 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves edge rusher and quarterback untouched.
Ben Sinnott at pick 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 145 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
LaDarius Henderson at slot 149 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Dadrion Taylor-Demerson all the way to pick 183, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Marcellas Dial in slot 223, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Myles Jones at the 256th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
