Nobody else had Jaden Hicks anywhere near the 88th pick. The Packers did, by 27 spots, and that gap is the whole story. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Wilson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The Packers indulged a want in Hicks while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
A conviction pick on Patrick Paul at pick 41 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They jumped the gun on Jonathon Brooks, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Javon Bullard in the 57th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Value with a capital V on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 74, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They went early on Sedrick Van Pran in Round 3, Pick 24, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jaden Hicks at safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Roman Wilson in pick No. 109 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Fair-plus on Max Melton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Tommy Eichenberg in Round 4, Pick 35 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
Ben Sinnott in No. 145 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Good price on Ethan Driskell in the 203rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
