This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Xavier Legette, the No. 29 name on the board, stolen at pick 92.
They will need Murphy to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
The board had Jordan Morgan higher than slot 40, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Tyler Nubin at No. 41 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 2, Pick 24 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Terrion Arnold was still sitting there in the Round 2 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Sedrick Van Pran. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Zak Zinter at pick No. 74, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Trey Benson at the 87th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Junior Colson slid further than he should have, and pick 88 is lovely value for the linebacker. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Taking Xavier Legette in Round 3, Pick 29 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Donovan Edwards in the 109th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Theo Johnson in slot 125, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Grayson Murphy at pick 135 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
James Williams slipping to the Round 5 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Michael Barrett is a better player than the 203rd pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
